Baboons play into my childhood. I liked to watch nature documentaries, and baboons really frightened me with their elongated snouts with huge canine teeth, set-in, angry eyes, and their penchant for aggression and meat-eating.
Now, I still recognize certain of their aspects as brutal but also admire them, as they had to develop alongside lions and other carnivores. They have a sort of noble spirit. Most species aren't very beautiful. But fairly recently, I saw some at a zoo (maybe olives) and one of the males was simply contemplating the back of his hand. I felt a kinship to him and perhaps my initial fear was also one of recognition..
